If you find yourself looking to start anew in a place surrounded by beauty with lots of entertainment options, Utah may be the answer. The state has many canyons to explore, forests to hike or leisurely stroll, and many other destinations that will astound. While known for its Mormon population, Utah has something for everyone to enjoy.
Utah was originally the property of Mexico, until the Mexican-American War. Mexico agreed to hand over the territory to the U.S. in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848. In 1849 when the Mormon settlers learned that California and New Mexico were applying to become states, they decided to do the same. However, the settlers were dreaming big and created a proposal for the State of Deseret. Deseret included nearly all the land from the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada, and went from the border of Mexico to as far as parts of the Oregon Territory. President Zachary Taylor, not wanting to ruffle feathers, entertained the idea of Deseret with the exception that California be absorbed into the state as well. Congress, however, were very discouraged by the lifestyle of Mormons and the idea of having such a large state, so they ultimately denied statehood to Deseret. In 1864, California settlers trekked to Utah in the hopes of mining minerals and were reward handsomely. In Toole County zinc, lead, silver, and gold were discovered. This finding caused a mass influx of people to Utah and for the population to diversify. In more recent times, the numerous national parks located in Utah have led to many films using the area as a backdrop.
